Avon man dies in flooding
An Avon man whose car was swept off the road by floodwater Saturday was found dead Monday and is the second person to die over the weekend while trying to cross flooded county roads in the area.
John Meyers, 46, called 911 shortly after 5:30 p.m. Saturday and told dispatchers his car was washed off of County Highway 20 in Fulton County southwest of London Mills. He said he could not swim and could not get his windows to roll down, then the call was lost, according to London Mills Fire Chief Rick Anderson.
A search team was dispatched to Meyers' approximate location after his emergency call was traced through the global positioning system in his cell phone. But rescuers were delayed because of flooded roads and had to find an alternate route that took 40 minutes, Anderson said.
The Department of Natural Resources searched the water with boats Saturday and Sunday, and the Life Flight helicopter from OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria assisted with floodlights.
Authorities located the car about 3 p.m. Monday when they saw the radio antenna sticking out of the water about 85 yards from the road, Anderson said.
