James M. O’Rourke


GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-Jim and Ruby Mitchell traveled to Grand Rapids, Mich., to attend the funeral of their daughter Carol’s husband, James M. O’Rourke. Surrounded by his family, Jim passed away March 5, 2009, after fighting a vigilant battle with cancer. Jim was a loving husband and father and is survived by his wife, Carol (Mitchell) O’Rourke, and four loving children: Erin (Dr. Bill) Lew and soon to arrive baby Lew, of Minneapolis, Minn., Dr. Michael (Dr. Sonia) O’Rourke, Chicago, Brian O’Rourke, San Francisco, Calif., and Shannon Therese O’Rourke of Washington, D.C. Also surviving are his sister, Patricia (Al) Jentzen, many nieces and nephews, extended family, and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Elizabeth O’Rourke, and sister, Mary O’Rourke Depcik Jim grew up in Chicago, graduated from Loyola University and Illinois State University. He served in the Peace Corp in India, worked as a writer in Chicago and then moved to Grand Rapids, Mich., where he worked in international marketing, and later owned and operated his own business. Through the years, Jim actively supported his family and his children’s activities and enjoyed writing and reading, running, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Jim smiled and laughed often in his life and brought joy to all he knew. Jim’s funeral was held Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at the Cascade Christian Church in Grand Rapids, Mich. Other family members traveling to Grand Rapids for Jim’s service were: Linda Casper, Lori and Kirk Hunter and Talon and Teagan, and Anita Mitchell.
