Mildred Poland


KEWANEE-Mildred Katherine Poland, 87, Kewanee, passed away at 1:44 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, 2009, in the Kewanee Care Home.
She was born March 7, 1922, in Iowa Falls, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Mollie (Gnade) Meyer. Dec. 15, 1941, she was united in marriage to Robert L. Poland in the Moody Bible Church Chapel with the Rev. Harold Ironside officiating.
Survivors include one son, Robert (Carolyn) Poland, University Place, Wash.; three daughters, Beth (Don) Penn, Normal, Karen (Al) DeConinck, Kewanee, and Linda (Tim) Buck, Dunlap; 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Poland in December 2006, after 65 years of marriage; one daughter, Katherine Poland; two brothers, Henry and Lewis Meyer; four sisters, Dorothy Bach, Maxine Barton, Freda Winter and Irene Meyer; and two grandchildren, Marybeth and Ryan Penn.
She graduated from Iowa Falls High School and attended and graduated from the Chicago Academy of Beauty Culture in Chicago.
She was a homemaker and was admired by her family and friends for being an excellent cook and baker as well as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
She enjoyed doing volunteer work in the community including in nursing homes and working the blood drives. She enjoyed playing bridge in several Kewanee card clubs.
She was a member of the Kewanee Greeters Club and the Kewanee Woman’s Club.
Services were held Saturday, April 18, 2009, in the First Church of God, Iowa Falls, Iowa, with the Rev. Stephen Acheson officiating.
Burial was in Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls, Iowa.
Memorials may be directed to the Kewanee Hospital Hospice.
Linns Funeral Home, Iowa Falls, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements. Local arrangements were in charge of Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee.
