Dale Eugene Johnson, 85, of Roseville, died at 2:57 a.m., Thursday, April 30, 2009, at Roseville Country Manor.
He was born Jan. 5, 1924, near Smithshire, to Frank William and Maude Ellen (Dakin) Johnson. He was born on his mother’s birthday in the house that was built by his grandfather, Elmer Taylor Johnson.
He married Valeta Arlene Richards June 24, 1948, in Lawrence, Kan. She survives. He gave her the nickname “Red” and they just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year with their whole family.
He is also survived by one son, Robert (Janis) Johnson, Roseville; one daughter, Marilou (Tim) Murphy, Galesburg; four grandchildren, Melissa Johnson, Wesminster, Colo., Brian Johnson, Smithshire and Joseph and Jon Schisler, both of Roseville; six great-granddaughters, Tristin, Brynn and Ellison Johnson and Callie Jo, Cadence and Adyson Schisler; two step-grandchildren, Taryn Johnson, Rock Island and Dr. Thomas Murphy, Peoria and two step-great-grandchildren, Jayson Johnson and Kaden Cirks.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Betty Rankin and one brother, Frank Johnson Jr.
He attended Jackson Corners School and Roseville Township High School. He joined the Navy and served in Australia, New Guinea, India and Nicaragua.
He worked at Briggs Pottery in Abingdon for 38 years.
He was well known for his love of restoring antique cars and motorcycles, which he did with his family. After living within a quarter mile of his birthplace most of his life, they moved from Ellison Township into Roseville in 1988 and to Roseville Country Manor one-year ago.
Graveside services were held Monday, May 4, 2009, in the Roseville Mausoleum.
