Austin L. Reed


Austin L. Reed, 92, of Bushnell, died at 9:38 p.m., Friday, May 1, 2009, at McDonough District Hospital, Macomb. 

He was born Dec. 1, 1916, in Pilot Grove, to Gordon C. and Mary E. (King) Reed. 

He married Darlene L. Coffman Feb. 22, 1939, in Kahoka, Mo. She preceded him death Oct. 19, 1988. 

He later married Maxine L. Botkin English on Jan. 1, 1998, in Bushnell. She survives.

He is also survived by one son, Gary (Beverly) Reed, Bushnell; one daughter, Rose Ann Lynn, Galesburg; three step-sons, Jim (Diane) English, Jerry (Phyllis) English and Kenneth (Carolyn) English, all of Bushnell; three step-daughters, Jane Teel, Blandinsville, Joyce (Roger) McCormick, New Philadelphia and Janice (Clyde) Peters, Cuba; seven grandchildren, Audie Reed, Bushnell, Angie (Brett) Tucker, Fort Collins Colo., Trina Carrillo, Gillette Wyo., Chris Reed and Cary Reed, both of Bushnell, Candi Ryan Powell, Ewa, Hawaii and Dusty Rose Helle, Evergreen, Colo.; 12 step-grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 18 step-great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded death by his parents; five brothers; one sister and one grandson, John Overstreet Jr.

He graduated from Elvaston High School. 

He worked for the TP&W Railroad for many years, which brought him to Bushnell. He later worked for Firestone in Bushnell. 

He then took a job with Vaughn & Bushnell, where he worked 42 years until his retirement. 

He was in the United States Army and fought in WWII. He was an avid woodworker and loved to bowl.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at Martin-Hollis Funeral Home, Bushnell. 

Burial was in Bushnell Cemetery. 

Memorials may be made to the Bushnell Rescue Squad.
