Eleanor Lucile Pontifex


Eleanor Lucile Pontifex, 77, of Macomb, died at 5:27 p.m., Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.

She was born Sept, 29, 1931, in Macomb, to Perry and Helen Lucile (Gingerich) Litchfield.

She married C. Richard Pontifex Sept. 10, 1950, in Macomb. He preceded her in death March 14, 2003.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Perry Eldon Litchfield.

She is survived by two daughters, Janice (Thomas) Gates and Jennifer Pontifex, both of Macomb; two sons, James Pontifex and John (Joanne) Pontifex, both of Macomb; two grandsons, Timothy Gates and Drew Pontifex; one granddaughter, Sarah Gates, Macomb and one sister, Jane (Thomas) McGrew, Prairie City.

She graduated from Bardolph High School and lived there for many years before moving to Macomb. She had worked at the Macomb News Agency for several years before her retirement. 

She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and was a member of the Womens Circle at Wesley. 

She was also a member of the Macomb Womens Club and the McDonough District Hospital Auxiliary, where she served as president from 1992-1997.

She also served as secretary and treasurer of the Bardolph Alumni Association.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at the Wesley United Methodist Church, Macomb, with the Rev. Russell Smith officiating. 

Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Macomb. 

Clugston -Tibbitts Funeral Home, Macomb, was in charge of arrangements. 

Memorials may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church or to the McDonough District Hospital Auxiliary.
