Viola A. Bennett


Viola A. Bennett, 86, of Rushville, pdied at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at Snyder's Vaughn-Haven Nursing Home, Rushville.

She was born April 23, 1923, in Worthington, Minn. to John and Ida (Schoo) Henning.

She married Cecil R. Bennett March 31, 1945, in Sibley, Iowa. He preceded her in death on Sunday, May 12, 1996.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Qurenis, Arnold and Donald Henning and three sisters, Loretta Paine, Geraldine Henning and Dorothy Burr.

She is survived by four sons, James C. (Ann) Bennett, New Hampton, Iowa, Richard J. (Pamela) Bennett, Pittsfield, Larry (Deb) Bennett, Rushville and Jeffrey J. (Teresa) Bennett, Macomb; one daughter, Barbara (Craig) Schoonover, Canton; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jack (Judy) Henning, Glencoe, Minn. and Bill Henning, Jordan, Minn.; four sisters, Esther (Kenny) Benedict, Lamberton, Minn., Leona Asham, Shakopee, Minn., Inez Coulter, Lamberton, Minn. and Wilda (Jim) Myers, Apple Valley, Minn. and several nieces and nephews.

She worked as a clerk at the A&P Store and Kerr Hardware in Rushville, before she worked as a nurse's aide at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville for many years retiring in 1984.

She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church and the Schuyler American Legion Auxiliary Post #4.

She served on the board of the Schuyler County Senior Citizen's Center and was the director of the Meals on Wheels program. She was also a member of the Wednesday night women's bowling league, where team won a state title.  She enjoyed gardening and working in her lawn in addition to her twice a day coffee group at Hardee's.

Services were held Saturday, May 9, 2009, at Wood Funeral Home, Rushville with the Rev. Rob Kirkham officiating.

Burial followed in Rushville City Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the Schuyler County Senior Citizen's Center.
