Gene Cathers, 83, of Macomb, died at 10:18 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at McDonough District Hospital, Macomb.

 

He was born March 29, 1926, in Keokuk, Iowa, to Jasper and Margaret Cathers. He married Nancy Hermetet Horton on December 29, 1962. She survives.

He is also survived by three daughters, Kim Horton, North Liberty, Iowa; Shelley (Lenny) Jones, Shiloh and Jill (Aaron) Hahn, Ankeny, Iowa; two granddaughters, Megan Jones and Emry Hahn and three "granddogs," Moose, Lily and Abby.

The family moved to Macomb in the fall of 1926 to open up the Park Coffee Shop, which later became the Ritz. After graduating from Macomb High School, he served in the Armed Guard of the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific from 1942-1944.

He then returned to Macomb to join his father in business and operated the Ritz until it was sold. He also had ownership in a Hardee's in Wisconsin; he worked as a bartender at the Elks Lodge in Macomb and as a clerk at the House of Bottles in Macomb before retiring.

Cremation has been accorded.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at the Wesley United Methodist Church. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to services.

Burial of ashes will be in Oakwood Cemetery with Military Rites.

Memorials may be made to American Legion Post 6, McDonough District Hospital Hospice Program, Macomb Elks Lodge 1009, or Wesley United Methodist Church.
