M. Roberta Vance, 90, of Carthage, died at 12:25 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2009, at McDonough District Hospital, Macomb.
Roberta was born Nov. 27, 1918, to Robert G. and Edith M. (Hill) McTee in Augusta.
She married Sherman A. Vance on July 24, 1937, in Kahoka, Mo. He preceded her in death in 1996.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Sherman Dale Vance, K.I.A., 1968, Vietnam War; one daughter, Judy Lynn Rund; one brother, Willy and one sister, Elsie.
She is survived by five children, Robert A. (Diana) Vance, Hanson, Ky., Bonnie Jean (Francis) Allen, West Point, Connie Jo (Royce Schierding) Marshall, St. Charles, Mo., Dr. William McTee (Pamela) Vance, Sedalia, Mo. and Jeffrey J. (Laurie) Vance, Grand Rapids, Mich.; one son-in-law, Kevin Rund, Lexington; 25 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
She attended Carthage High School, graduating in 1936.
She had worked as a nurse's aid at Memorial Hospital, Carthage and at Dryden's Rubber Plant.
She worked longest and enjoyed her job as the banquet hostess at the Holiday Inn, Quincy.
Roberta lived in West Point from 1960 to 2001, when she moved to Carthage.
She was a member of the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for nearly 60 years and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Bowen and Carthage over 40 years.
She was the last surviving Gold Star Mother in Hancock County and was honored in the local parades.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at Printy Funeral Home, Carthage.
Burial will follow in the Harmony Township Cemetery near Bentley.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until time of services Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary or the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
