Dr. Joseph H. Krichel


Dr. Joseph H. Krichel died Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at Naples Community Hospital after a long, courageous battle with cancer.


He was born Oct. 6, 1933, in Keokuk, Iowa, to Dr. Joseph and Wilma Krichel.

He married Isabelle (Pezley), Sept. 3, 1955. She survives.

He is also survived by one daughter, Lori Gernhardt, Houston, Texas; two sons, Greg (Sabrina) Krichel, Woodward, Iowa and Todd Krichel, Baton Rouge, La.; grandsons, Nathan Krichel, Jared Roussel, Hunter Krichel and Grant Krichel; three sisters, Virginia Jenkins of Philadelphia, Penn., Barbara Warnock, Wenatchee, Wash. and Carol Dose, Salem, Ore.; several cousins, nieces, nephews and countless friends.

He graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in veterinary medicine in 1957, and joined his father in practice at Krichel Animal Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

He received many awards in his profession including the prestigious Stange Award from Iowa State University. He served as president of the Eastern Iowa Veterinary Association and the Iowa Veterinary Association.

He also served on numerous boards, including 12 years on the American Veterinary Medical Association Group Insurance Trust, treasurer of the Keokuk Industrial Development Corporation, past president of the Keokuk Area Hospital Board and campaign chair of the Hoerner YMCA.

He and his wife, Isabelle moved to Naples, Florida in 1997. There he was an active member of the Florida State Golf Rating Team, served as chair of the Greens Committee of NHGCC and had served on the Mayflower Congregational Church Council.

His hobbies were golfing, flying his Cessna, fishing, traveling and reading. His passion was golfing, in which he had five holes in one.

He had a true love of life and will be remembered most for his unmatched sense of humor and his deep compassion.

The family will be receiving friends at St. Paul's Church of Christ from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m., with a memorial service following at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 7, 2009.
