George C. Hartley

SEBRING, Fla.-George C. Hartley, 84, Sebring, Fla., passed away Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Highlands Regional Medical Center in Sebring.

He was born in Avon, Ill., the son of the late George E. and Cora (Snook) Hartley.

He attended London Mills schools and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy as an SSML (ship service man laundry) 2nd Class, 1943-1945, stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. In 1952 he married Doris A. Farr (deceased) and had three daughters. George and Doris divorced after the girls were grown. George married Pat Devlin in 1981, later divorced, but remained life long friends.

In 1983 he retired from Outboard Marine Corp. (Gale Products) after 32 years of service.

George was active in the Grand Squares Square Dance Club, Galesburg, Ill.

He spent the past 26 years in Sebring enjoying retirement. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his daughters, Rhonda H. (Joe) Watton, West Des Moines, Iowa, Rochelle (Jim) White, Chapel Hill, N.C., and Regina Hartley, Peoria; sisters, Gertrude Ahnert, Estacada, Ore., and Marie Way, Monmouth; and two granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jesse and Frank; sister, Grace White; and half brother, Charles Serven.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, June 13, 2009, in Prairie City Cemetery, Prairie City, with Pastor Glen (Rick) Weiss Jr. of Ellisville Christian Church officiating. Lunch will follow at London Mills Community Park at 11:30 a.m. (across from the Methodist Church). Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross Blood Services, 405 W. John Gwynn Jr. Ave, Peoria, IL 61605 or to the Sebring Eagles 4240, 12921 U.S. Hwy 98 South, Sebring, FL 33876.

Morris Funeral Chapel, Sebring, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.
