Daniel L. Steach
AVON-Daniel Lee Steach, 74, Avon, died at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 2009, in Galesburg Cottage Hospital after a brief, but brave fight with lung cancer.
He was born July 12, 1934, in Abingdon, the son of James and Frieda (McElrea) Steach. He married Marna Mae Allison July 30, 1955, in Hernando, Miss.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Mike (Teresa) Steach, Bloomington, and Sam (Heidi) Steach, Normal; two daughters, Allison (John) Alden, Avon, and Marnie (Brent) Dugan, Avon; two sisters, Carol (Dale) Little, Avon, and Dixie (Gary) Ray, Abingdon; 11 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gene Steach.
Dan graduated from Avon High School in 1952 and worked for Gale Products in Galesburg for 20 years before going back to school to realize his dream of becoming a school teacher and a coach. He attended Carl Sandburg Community College and Western Illinois University, graduating from Western with an Elementary Education degree in 1974. He completed his student teaching in Bushnell and went on to become a grade school teacher at Valley Elementary School, where he taught for 23 years. While at Valley, he coached junior high basketball, track and junior varsity football. He was a positive role model and influence to many young students and athletes at Valley.
Dan enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and spending time with his family. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Fighting Illini fan. He was a very special husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Services were held Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at the Federated Church in Avon.
Burial was in Avon Cemetery.
