Virginia Vaneta (Peck) Christy


Virginia Vaneta (Peck) Christy, 94, of Carthage, died at 8 p.m., June 11, 2009, at Memorial Hospital, Carthage.

Virginia was born Dec. 31, 1914, near Moline, to Charles and May Breitenstein. She married Dale Christy on Sept. 26, 1936, in Rock Island. He preceded her in death Nov. 25, 1991.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Michael Garrelts.

Virginia is survived by two daughters, Beverly Sharon Garrelts, Wilmington, and Nancy Jenkins, Carthage; four grandchildren, Christy (Garrelts) Goodwin, Jennifer (Jenkins) Giltmier, and Jacqueline (Jenkins) Stachewicz; seven great-grandchildren, Scott Goodwin, Matthew Goodwin, Jaime Goodwin, Jeffrey Goodwin, Andrew Giltmier, Jacob Stachewicz, and Margaret Stachewicz.

Virginia was adopted by Orin (Jack) and Lula (Cramer) Peck on June 12, 1916, at the age of 17 months. She attended school in Whiteside County, Plymouth, and Moline. Virginia helped her husband on their family farm until retirement, and also worked for many years in the kitchen at Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Ferris Christian Church, Ferris. Virginia’s most enjoyable pastime was spending time with her family. She also loved watching and collecting cardinals, reading, gardening and cooking. Virginia will be greatly missed by her extended family and many good friends as well. 

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Printy Funeral Home, Carthage.

Burial will be in Moss Ridge Cemetery, Carthage.

Visitation will be held from 3-8 p.m., Monday, June 15, 2009, at Printy Funeral Home. Available family will meet with friends from 6-8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Ferris Christian Church or the Hancock County Nursing Home.
