ABINGDON-Helen R. Hobbs, 92, Abingdon, died at 3:11 a.m. Thursday, June 11, 2009, in OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.
She was born April 6, 1917, in Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of John Thomas and Katherine (Haley) Kearns. She married N.F. Perkins Oct. 14, 1942, in Pampa, Texas. He preceded her in death Jan. 24, 1944. She later married James C. “Pete’’ Hobbs Oct. 1, 1946, in Rock Island. He preceded her in death Nov. 29, 1993.
She is survived by one son, Michael Hobbs, Galesburg; a nephew, Steve Hughes, New Lenox; and cousins. She is also survived by her pet cat, “Kittie’’.
In addition to her husbands she was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mary E. Hughes.
Helen graduated from Austin High School in El Paso, Texas. She worked for the Mountain States Bell Telephone Company in El Paso, Texas, and Northwestern Bell in Davenport, Iowa. She later helped her second husband at Hobbs Grocery and Feed Store in Abingdon.
She was active in reunions for the members of the Army, 773rd Field Artillery Battalion, which her second husband served with.
She was a devoted wife and mother.
Services were held Monday, June 15, 2009, in the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel with Father Deus-Dedit Byabato officiating.
Burial was in the Abingdon Cemetery.
In her honor, memorials may be made to the Abingdon Food Pantry.
