Sherman O. Tweedt
Sherman O. Tweedt, 100, of Carthage, died at 2:10 a.m., Monday, June 29, 2009 at his home.
He was born August 16, 1908, in Kelly, Iowa, to Edward and Belle (Stinson) Tweedt. He married Mary Roseberry on October 23, 1932 in Carthage. She preceded him in death in 1990.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; a son, Roger Tweedt; and two brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his daughter, Sally Elmore, Carthage; six grandchildren, Rauna (Rob) Cadwell Brown, Augusta, Mark Cadwell, Carthage, Mary Beth Howell, Carthage, Robert Cadwell, Carthage, Matthew Tweedt, California, and Cathy (Jess) Tweedt Irwin, St. Louis, Mo.; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Mervin Tweedt, Council Bluffs, Iowa; a sister, Esther (Tweedt) Latta, Madrid, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Kelly High School in 1927.
He owned and operated the Carthage Maytag Company for over 50 years and had the first television set in Hancock County. He retired in 1973. He also built and co-owned the T & C Bowling Alley in Carthage. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carthage and was the organizer of the Triangle Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Carthage School Board, Carthage City Council, and was on the Board of Directors at the Hancock Savings and Loan.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 3, 2009 at First United Methodist Church, Carthage.
Burial will follow in Moss Ridge Cemetery, Carthage. Visitation will be held from 3-8 p.m., Thursday, July 2, 2009 at Printy Funeral Home, Carthage, with family meeting friends from 6-8 p.m.
