Charles R. Schleich
ABINGDON-Charles R. “Chuck’’ Schleich, 73, Monmouth, formerly of Abingdon, died at 3:28 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.
He was born July 4, 1935, in Fulton County, near Ellisville, the son of William Byron and Zelpha Mae (Schrodt) Schleich. He married Betty J. Miller June 13, 1954, in Macomb. He later married Juanita G. Cox Nov. 21, 1987, in Macomb. She survives.
He is also survived by his children, Deborah West, Galesburg, Cindy (Pat) Flaherty, Galesburg, Charles W. Schleich, Avon, and Rhonda (William) Cassell, Galesburg; three stepchildren, Clifford (Deb) Elliott, Brad (Tina) Elliott and Tammy Hayburn, all of Monmouth; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; one brother Robert (Teresa) Schleich, Monmouth; four sisters, Rose (Don) Gianessi, Pekin, Ruth Quigley, Moline, Alice (Larry) Plate, Adair, and Mary Jane Schleich, Abingdon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; one brother; two grandchildren; two stepsons; and one stepgrandson.
Chuck graduated from Macomb High School. He worked at the McDonough County Farm Bureau for two years, Algonquine Redi Mix for eight years, and farmed in the Abingdon area for 45 years, retiring in 2006. He then worked part-time for RYCO Ag Products in Bushnell for two years.
He was a member of the Abingdon Masonic Lodge #185 and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was also a member of the Shrine. He enjoyed history, especially the Civil War Era, and he liked to travel.
Family was very important to Chuck and he loved spending as much time as he could with all of them.
Services were held Saturday, June 27, 2009, in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel with Mrs. Eleanor Landon officiating.
Burial was in the Abingdon Cemetery.
In honor of Chuck, memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.
