Edith A. Ellwood
Edith A. Ellwood, 84, of Rushville, died Sunday, July 19, 2009 at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb. She was a recent resident of Bickford Cottage in Macomb.
Born in Vienna, Mo. on April 2, 1925, she was the daughter of Walter and Jesse McKeever Briggs. She married Walter Ellwood on June 11, 1949 in Fulton, Mo. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Walter passed away on October 14, 2000.
Four brothers preceded her in death; Quentin, Bob, Bill and Joe Briggs.
Edith is survived by five daughters, Pat (Dan) Kinsell, Chapin, Mary (Chuck) Downs,Normal, Barb (Jim) Kerr, Rushville, Colleen (Neil) Settles, Jacksonville, Brenda (Mike) Smith, Macomb; eleven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
With four brothers at home, Edith learned to care for their many scrapes, bruises and broken bones. This first hand experience and her understanding of people brought her to the Army Cadet Nursing Program at St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Quincy. After graduation from St. Mary’s, she worked as a Registered Nurse in various areas. In 1981, she earned her Bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University. Edith served as the district nurse for Schuyler County Schools and taught health occupation classes at Rushville High School from 1967-1992.
She assisted as a volunteer with the Cass-Schuyler Hospice program and the American Heart Association. She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at St. Rose Catholic Church in Rushville. Monsignor Richard Pricco will officiate.
Visitation will be held at 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville.
Interment will be in Rushville City Cemetery.
