Dorothy Lucille McCorkell Whitaker


Dorothy Lucille (McCorkell) Whitaker, 99, of Hamilton, died at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug.9, 2009, at Montebello Health Care Center, Hamilton.
She was born Sept. 15, 1909, in Akron, Iowa, to Howard and Estella (Tucker) McCorkell. She married Charles Whitaker on Aug. 1, 1928, in La Mars, Iowa. He preceded her in death Aug 11, 1975.
She was also preceded in death by two sons, Duane and Dennis; five sisters, Alta (Oscar) Mentzer, Esther Clarey, Sybil (Basil) Whitaker, Caryl (Jack)Siebens, Evah (Red) Davis; and one brother, Wesley McCorkell.
She is survived by seven sons, Melvin E. (Marlene) Whitaker, Hamilton, Lowell E. (Marge) Whitaker, Dallas, Texas, Kenneth W. "Duck" (Janet) Whitaker, Hamilton, Stanley E. (Marge) Whitaker, Keokuk, Iowa, Jerry L. (Carol) Whitaker, Hickory, N.C., Billy J. (Phyllis) Whitaker, Carthage, Michael W. (Pamela) Whitaker, Keokuk, Iowa; two sisters, Lois (Melvin) Neilson, rural Akron, Iowa, and Jeanne (Clare) Esterberg, Alexandria, Minn.; 19 grandchildren, Cass Whitaker, Lowell Dean Whitaker, Debbie Leffler, Matthew Whitaker, Ronald (Deborah) Whitaker, Kim (Tim) Hogue, Randyl (Jacque) Whitaker, Kenneth Whitaker, Mark (Deanna) Whitaker, Trent Whitaker, Heather (Jeff) Wiley, Tori (Viet) Ngyuen, Shawn (Hannah) Whitaker, Chaille (Kraig) Brown, Scott Whitaker, Wendi (Rich) Hopkins, Corey (Rebekah) Whitaker, Brad (Teresa) Whitaker, and Kristi (Joshua) Teague; and  over 30 great grandchildren.
She and her husband raised a nephew, Virgil Whitaker, and a niece, Lorraine Crabill, after her sister, Sybil, died.
She was a teacher in Akron, Iowa. Later, she prepared meals for the Ferris School System, Hancock County, for over 20 years. Dorothy also served in various capacities as a Green Thumb worker including a time working at the Hancock County Mental Health Department, Carthage, and for a physician’s office in Hamilton. She was also a nurses aid at Memorial Hospital, Carthage. She was a member of the Methodist Church, Hamilton.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, at the United Methodist Church, Hamilton, with the Rev. Julie Azbell, Pastor Shawn Whitaker and Pastor Scott Whitaker officiating.
Burial will be in Moss Ridge Cemetery, Carthage.
Memorials may be made in her memory.
