David Laurence Baker
AVON-David Laurence Baker, 67, Avon, died at 7:25 p.m. Thursday, July 30, 2009, in OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.
He was born April 10, 1942, in Berwyn, the son of Glenwood “Woody’’ and Marion (Yeoman) Baker. He married Barbara L. Doxey Aug. 15, 1964, in LaGrange. She survives.
He is also survived by three daughters, Shari (Joseph) Robinson, Galesburg, Cynthia (Lorne) Mann, Sandwich, and Linda (Brian) Korbel, Addison; one brother Richard H. (Hwa) Baker, Henderson, Nev.; one sister, Rossann Baker-Priestly, Galesburg; seven grandchildren, Katherine, Megan and Nicholas Robinson, Madeline and Benjamin Wroczynski, Thomas Mann and Kerri Korbel.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Gruner.
He served in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1969 as an E-5 in the United States, Turkey, Dominican Republic, Southeast Asia and Vietnam. He also served with T.A.C. and S.A.C.
David worked as a design and test engineer first at A T & T and then Lucent Technology in Lisle for 30 years, retiring in 2001.
He graduated from Lyons Township High School in LaGrange.
He was a member of the Avon Lions Club and Camp Fire USA Illinois Prairie Council. He was a former union steward for Illinois Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was an area representative for the Spoon River Drive. David was also involved as a youth with the Western Spring Children’s Theatre and the Chicago Boys Club.
An informal gathering of friends and family will be held Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Federated Church in Avon.
Cremation will be accorded. A private burial will be at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the Avon Lions Club, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, American Lung Association or to a Charity of the donors choice.
