Gilbert E. Onion

Gilbert E. “Gene’’ Onion, age 72, of 206 West Adams Street, Biggsville, Ill., formerly of Swedona, passed away at 9:09 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.

He was born April 16, 1927, in Abingdon, the son of Russell G. and Lucille Hendricks Onion.

He married Carol Glennadean Kinzer on March 5, 1945 in Burlington, Iowa. She survives.

Other survivors include one son, Robert Onion, Biggsville; two brothers, George Onion and Russell Onion Jr., both of Abingdon; two sisters, Betty Miller, Galesburg, and Susan Howard, Brimfield; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one granddaughter.

He was reared and educated in Abingdon.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a crane operator and welder at International Harvester Corp., East Moline, for 30 years, retiring in 1980.

He was a member of Swedona Lutheran Church,Teamsters Union Local 1304 in East Moline and the Ophiem American Legion Post.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth.

Burial was in Swedona Lutheran Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established; the family will designate a recipient later.
