Hugh A. Newell

Hugh A. Newell, 86, a resident of Elms Nursing Home in Macomb, formerly of Blandinsville, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at 7:50 a.m. at McDonough District Hospital.

He was born Aug. 13, 1913, in Paris, Mo., to William and Susie Cox Newell. He married Lucille Hodges April 19, 1936, in Blandinsville. She died Aug. 25, 1999.

He is survived by one brother-in-law, Rusty (Betty) Hodges of Macomb; four sisters-in law, Charlene (Bill) Downey of Macomb, Myra Robinson of Morton, Josephine Deems of Blandinsville and Claudia McGrann of Raleigh, N.C.; one son, Courtney Newell of Oracle, Ariz.; one daughter, Donna (Paul) Augustyn of Marengo, Wis.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Mr. Newell graduated from Augusta High School and lived most of his life in Blandinsville before moving to Macomb in 1998. He was a farmer most of his life, and later worked at Thompson’s Hardware Store in Blandinsville and Farm King in Macomb.

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Blandinsville, where he was a deacon and very active in all church activities.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 22, at the First Christian Church in Blandinsville with the Revs. Ed Gund and Lee Unger officiating, and burial was in Glade City Cemetery in Blandinsville. Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Blandinsville was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church in Blandinsville or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
